LLNL teams up to help complete airline baggage and cargo explosives detection equipment

COVINGTON, Ky. and LIVERMORE, Calif., July 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Valley Forge Composite Technologies, Inc. (OTC:VLYF) (BULLETIN BOARD: VLYF) , Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and several Russian Institutes led by P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute (LPI) announced the completion of a collaborative Department of Energy (DOE) Global Initiative for Proliferation Prevention (GIPP) project to develop equipment and procedures for detecting explosive materials concealed in airline checked baggage and cargo.

Technical objectives of the project included the development and automation of the accelerator-detector complex for high efficiency detection of hidden explosives. Data acquisition and a photonuclear signature database were created. The system was operated and tested albeit on a limited sample size. A technique for the time analysis of signals from latent targets was developed and tested. This resulted in the positive identification of carbon and/or nitrogen. These techniques detected measurable decay from the radioisotopes formed upon irradiation.

This Cooperative Research And Development Agreement (CRADA) project was intended to address the objectives of the Border and Transportation Security Program (BTSP) and the Chemical and Biological National Security Program (CBNP) for LLNL's Homeland Security Organization in support of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Security Administration (NNSA).

"This was the culmination of a significant research and development effort that impacts several national and world security needs. This Advanced System we call THOR-LVX has the potential to be a technological breakthrough in detection capability and accuracy. Valley Forge was honored to work with some leading scientists of The United States of America and the Russian Federation on this project," said Louis Brothers, CEO Valley Forge.

Latest Trend in Green Gardening?

A Livermore company has launched a series of drip irrigation kits, which it says saves gardeners time and money.

An Irrigation Direct news release says:
In these economic times where "staycations" are a common way to spend a holiday, more people are putting their time and effort into making their homes and gardens more enjoyable. Hand watering is time consuming and it's frustrating when plants die. Sprinkler systems can waste water as it evaporates into the air before reaching the ground. Drip irrigation applies water directly to the soil where it trickles down to plant roots. By installing, or switching to, a drip system, home owners save money on water bills, reduce weed growth, and eliminate overspray onto cars and sidewalks.

With over 30 drip kits for vegetable gardens, decks and patios, trees, roses, raised beds, etc., consumers can easily find drip irrigation kits to meet their specific home garden needs. Gravity Feed Kits attach to a rain barrel or garbage can and use captured rain water.

All that is needed is a faucet or garden hose to connect to. "I am a weekend gardener and have been using your drip irrigation products with amazing results," says Irrigation Direct customer Olof Hult. "After removing the existing lawn, we now use only 20% of the household water relative to the first year with the old sprinklers."
